A “unicorn kitten” with a rare coat pattern arrived at a rescue north of NYC. Westchester County, NY rescuers at FURRR 911,  unexpectedly found some very unusual kittens. The neonatal rescue organization focuses on saving the tiniest babies, often 4 weeks old or younger, with exceptions.  Most years sadly in warm states, kitten season extended well past the spring into fall, with new arrivals almost daily.

Previously, we shared an adorable 4-week-old polydactyl kitten with the biggest paws they had ever seen with 24 toes. Now, they have rescued a kitten with a pretty coat that looks like “two different cats were pieced together.”

‘Unicorn Kitten’ Appears Like 2 Cats Pieced Together

In late summer 2022, Furrr 911 got a call for help, and a woman brought them a box of five starving kittens in the evening. Among them was the “unicorn kitten,” which, from above, looked like a tortoiseshell. However, when the rescuers looked closer, she had an entirely different pattern underneath.

“Genetics are truly amazing. This is one of the kittens that we received this week. When I peeked into the box, I thought that she was a tortie. Then I picked her up. Her whole underside has typical tabby markings! If you look at her in profile…it appears like two different cats were pieced together,” the rescuers shared.

Now, here she is from the front, showing a tabby pattern.

From the side, she also appears like a tabby.

Whatever this kitten’s pattern is called, she’s just adorable.

“A friend was visiting when this kitten arrived, and she hit it on the head when she called her a unicorn kitten. 🦄 😹”

What Kind of Kitty is This Unicorn?

So, is this kitten a tortie or a tabby? Well, we know most of our followers already know the answer.

In the comments, Laura E. shared:

“Tortie-tabbies are my favorite ❤️So cute that she’s a topside tortie and a tummy tabby! My girl has tabby legs of different colors, and I used to say she looks like Pippi Longstocking😂”

Another person said:

” A rare Tabby Tortie is a Torbie 😻😻 she’s very cute 😻”

That’s right! The Unicorn Kitten is a Torbie, but her markings are very unusual, making her appear like two separate cats depending on the view. Torbies aren’t rare, but this one is indeed a rare unicorn.

The kitten’s fur reminds of us chimera cats like Quimera and Venus. But, these stunning cats have differently colored eyes and appear like 2 cats on their face. Absolutely breathtaking.

As you may know, Cole and Marmalade’s housemates, Jugg and Zig Zag, are also technically torbies or tortoiseshell-tabbies!

How the Unicorn Kitten Arrived at Furrr 911

Before the unicorn kitten litter arrived at the rescue, they were in serious danger.

“…One kitten separated from the pack and sounded the alarm. A person heard the kitten’s cries and scooped up the wanderer. She then located the four siblings huddled near a fence on the property line of an apartment complex and reunited the family.”

After reuniting the kittens, she kept an eye out for their mother, the right thing to do. However, she never appeared, and then the kittens began getting close to the main road.

“Each day, she checked on the little ones, but never saw the mom cat. However, the huddle of kittens were slowly moving closer and closer to the road. By Tuesday evening, they were dangerously close to the main road, so the finder took them in and bottle-fed them.”

Bottle-feeding young kittens is a round-the-clock undertaking, but as often happens, she didn’t quite know what to do. By the time she called, the litter was struggling but thank goodness she did. When kittens are hungry, they often try to suckle each other in desperation, which is dangerous and can even be fatal. But fortunately, they were all active and crying without signs of illness.

The unicorn kitten wasn’t the only rare kitten recently, and the rescue sees all kinds of furbabies needing help. For instance, here are three they weren’t expecting, Stan, Samantha, and Sally Squirrel.

“Since we were finally enjoying a day without new kitten arrivals, of course, this happened. 🐿 🐿 🐿”
