It’s a place where animals are supposed to be able to recover from trauma. A place where they’re safe from the horrors of the outside world. Lives filled with unimaginable heartbreak are given a fresh start within the comforting walls. At least that is what a foster home is expected to be. For one cat in Utah, her foster home proved to be the opposite. Now, pretty tortie cat Freya is the center of an investigation revolving around her foster home and three…yes, THREE broken legs!
It all started with a seemingly caring and innocent phone call on February 21st, 2019.
A New Beginning Animal Rescue (ANBAR) in Layton, UT received the call from one of their new fosterers. She was a bit concerned as the cat Freya, had jumped out of her boyfriends arms and was acting “strange”. She hadn’t seen it happen but thought the cat had possible hurt her leg. The shelter set up an appointment for Freya to go to the vet immediately.
When their veterinarian, Dr. Kristie Ellis called the shelter to report on the findings, the first thing she said shocked them.
“Please sit down”.
The vet then informed them that Freya not only had an injury to one of her legs, she had three broken legs WITH multiple fractures! Sadly, she also confirmed that there was NO way that type of damage could have happened falling from someone’s arms. The cat had to have been thrown against the wall or the floor.
The shelter is absolutely horrified, heartbroken and infuriated that this occurred.
Just as with any animal foster home or foster based rescue organization, each foster is screened. They are interviewed, fill out all required documentation and home visits were even conducted. Unfortunately, there is no way to control who is passing through that world. People come and go as they please. It’s actually beneficial for foster animals to have contact with many people to socialize them.
But as a foster parent, it’s your responsibility to supervise visitors and not put the animals in danger. Whether this woman was present when the incident happened or not, cannot be proven. When she called, was she covering up for the man or did she truly not know the extent of the situation? Is she in danger of his wrath as well? Unless they confess, there is no way to confirm what happened to Freya.
Angry does not even come close to what we feel. We have turned this case over to the State Investigator and hope that the right thing will be done with the man who hurt Freya. The injury happened several days ago but they didn’t tell us until yesterday and let her suffer!
We now have to focus on sweet Freya and help her and make her whole again.
That road to recovery will be long and costly for poor Freya.
Not only will her bones and physical being have to mend, her emotional state will need time to repair the damage done. While Freya concentrated on overcoming the turmoil, A New Beginning Animal Rescue began raising funds for her. With three broken legs needing surgery and a long expected recovery period, it would certainly be costly.
They shared the story on their Facebook page to the horror of their followers.
PLEASE, help us to help her. We feel very responsible that this happened to her, even though we couldn’t foresee this. She will need multiple surgeries, with the first one starting tomorrow. She had to be stabilized first because of all the trauma.
The first surgery went well and Freya would have a special soul looking after her during her rehabilitation period.
Dr. Ellis will actually be fostering Freya for the next few MONTHS while she heals! It’s hard even now to look at the x-rays of her fragile bones before and after the first surgery.
She is doing well, we fixed her back leg with an external fixature and one of the front legs with a pin.
We placed bone grafts in both legs that we fixed. Her other leg we decided just to splint and surgery took 4 hours.
Dr. Ellis estimates the total costs for her surgeries to be around $2500.00! That doesn’t include any issues that may arise and the basic aftercare funds that will likely be needed.
Her pain is being controlled with heavy duty pain meds. When they shaved her legs for surgery, one of the legs was black and blue and purple from trauma. Here are more pictures of the poor baby, please note that they are graphic!
Please consider donating to Freya’s costs and following their social media pages to follow her successes. We’re sure with the attention she’s being given, the affection being showed to her finally and the caring workers helping her heal, it won’t be long until she’s running and playing in her very own forever home!
*Please also remember that the investigation is ongoing!
The shelter is not going to hand out the suspects name so (well-deserved) retribution can be handed out. They are not going to give out details that will do anything to harm the case.
The FORMER fosterer’s name will be shared in private with other local shelters and rescue organizations however. They want to be sure that the couple isn’t allowed to have access to more animals in the future through them. Sadly, they can’t monitor everything they do, but rest assured–they’re doing all the can to give Freya justice.
REMEMBER: ADOPT, DON’T SHOP; FOSTERING SAVES LIVES & SPAY AND NEUTER!

The bastard(s) deserve to have both arms and legs broken permanently! Hurting a poor animal is unforgivable. ? The least authorities can do is jail, if not more.
“The injury happened several days ago but they didn’t tell us until yesterday and let her suffer!”
That means the FORMER foster person is just as responsible as her so-called boyfriend. Even if she was not present to see whatever despicable thing he did, she HAD to have known that the cat was seriously injured. And that he was responsible. But she did nothing for several days. I hope she is held criminally liable, as well as him.
Perhaps, she delayed due to being afraid of the boyfriend. Not saying that she shouldn’t be held responsible, but there is probably more to the story that isn’t being shared online.
I just cried reading this – I am praying for recovery for Freya and for justice. How could someone be so cruel to her like that?
I hope the prosecute these “so-called ” fosters to the fullest. No animal whatsoever deserves what this poor baby had to go through. I am angry and disgusted. Not that i condone any kind of violence, but perhaps, the woman deserves what she gets. ‘ what goes around comes around” the other person, if you can call him that…. Karma has a way of coming back on those who have hurt others, animal or human.
This made me cry, I can’t believe anyone could do this to a poor, sweet innocent cat. I hope the people responsible for this are brought to justice, even though whatever sentencing will never be enough. And the girlfriend should be prosecuted for letting this poor baby suffer for days on end. I can’t believe what monsters walk among us. I really hope Freya finds a forever home and knows nothing but love and kindness for the rest of her life.
I foster for my local Humane society and am so angry and sickened that someone could choose to take an animal into their home just to harm it. when they were given the gift of that animals life and trust its beyond disturbing. We foster to help the sick, young or frightened become happy social cats and kittens and find their forever homes not to cause more trauma. SHAME!
Animals give unconditional love. This bastard should have his head examined. Obviously, he is an unhappy person to take it out on a defenseless cat.
This abusive SOB should have to pay for not only the vet fees but for emotional damage for this baby as well! God, I hate abuse! Prayers for this beautiful baby!
Everyone is immediately blaming the foster women. Without all the details we don’t know what happened. As stated early in the article, she may be in an abusive relationship and was unable to take the cat in for care earlier because of that. If that is the case, she is in as much need of rescue as the cat. Up to the authorities to determine if one or both humans should be punished. Whoever is to blame for the abuse of this animal needs to be locked up for a very long time. I wished I lived in that state and could adopt this poor kitty myself. I hope she finds a loving furever home soon.
I’m left wondering what the maximum penalty this horrible person can get under law. I also think all animal lovers should band together to do what we can to change the laws to increase penalties for animal abusers to mandatory jail time.
they should have both legs and arms broken and see how it feels I am glad that they are no longer have access to animals again I would never do that to my cat or a dog or any animal I am glad that Freya is getting better its going to take her a long time to trust people again but with the right person to take care of her she should be fine into a loving family
that shithead! where is he located?
I agree with Sue. She let the cat suffer. She may have been involved with the abuse as well. Lets hope these 2 don’t reproduce… Sick. Cat could not walk, clearly, with 3 broken legs, so she just let it lay there. I hope they are prosecuted to the fullest degree. And forced to pay for the surgeries. The severely black and blue leg is sickening. Clearly they did this to her. I hope they are reading this. You are extremely bad people. You need to seek help. I pray you do.Please dont have children.
This is the most horrible heartbreaking thing I’ve ever read I wish karma on that SOB 3 fold! I hope maybe Freya will recover quickly and get the loving care she deserves from a real family with real human beings ?❤️?
Where can we donate for Freya?
Our Facebook page currently has a donate button or you can visit their website where there is a donate button. =)
Before either of the previous foster carers are punished for harming Freya, it needs to be found out just how much he, she, if not THEY were involved. Before justice is carried out, we need to be sure that the correct person is to be crippled.
This should be a function of the Law Enforcement personnel handling the investigation. For now, all that can be done by persons such as us is to maintain around the clock ‘buffer’ between the previous foster persons and any & all animals that they might come into contact with. Ensure that at no time are either of these persons left alone or physically come into direct contact with another animal.
IF, and ONLY if, the investigation into whom did this disgusting act again Freya, becomes slow or fails to suitably find who harmed her and when, THEN both of the suspects can be approached and asked for full disclosure of the facts of Freyas injuries. The Law Personnel can not retrieve this information through the use of direct physical coercion. Their hands are tied. Ours are not. Depending on how Freya was injured/beaten, and whom/what was involved, the punishment would need to fit the involvement crime.
Once the truth is know, then we can deal with the human filth, and deal with it we are likely going to have to.
I personally have no issues with carrying out justice and ensuring the guilty do not harm other animals/persons ever again.
If the woman that was fostering this cat was in an abusive relationship, that is awful but what is more awful is that she brought another innocent victim into her home to be abused. They both deserve the maximum penalties for the abuse this poor cat suffered.
I would have investigators haul in BOTH the woman who fostered this feline and the boyfriend (POS) and question them to no avail. I’d also alert Animal Legal Defense Fund and ask them to take on this case to prosecute to the fullest extent possible.
I hope that they both end up going to jail where they belong. They also should have to pay for the vet bills which is only right. Animal abuse laws need to be more strict. This kind of thing happens way too much
I hope both of them go to jail where they belong. Both of them also should be responsible for paying the vet bills as well. The animal abuse laws should be more strict. This happens way too often
I hope that both of them end up going to jail because both of them deserve it. They also should be responsible for paying the vet bills as well. The animal abuse laws should be more strict. Unfortunately this happens way too much
He did this without remorse I’m sure! I’m a strong believer in hard punishment for a crime like this one! He should be put in a jail cell with someone who loves cats & have the same done to him!
Heartbreaking.
I’ve rescued and fostered for 30+ years now , I can never understand any mistreatment of precious animals in any regard!!!
I have recently list my husband who supported my rescues so I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube on good things, when somehow a disturbing video came on with a woman dressed nicely had a basket of little puppies she took one bye one and hurled them to their deaths in a raging river!!
I was sickened almost threw up, than I realized someone was video taping her. It is beyond sickening to know that these monsters exists in this world now and always will.
Bless you Freya may you mend quickly physically and emotionally.
Thank you for all who care.
Laura
Sick sadist needs punishing severely as he’s only going to go on doing this type of cruelty..I find this is upsetting me terribly, poor Fre ya, feeling so sad .
So sad. I should be used to these stories by now but it’s stil like a blow to the stomach every time. I just can’t understand how people can do such things (and watch such things being done) to defenseless animals. My two “kids” are my priority, their safety come before my own. If someone in my life was hurting them, that person would wish they were in hell. People who hurt animals are sick inside and those who defend them and choose to live with them anyway are sick too. Such people disgust me and I will not associate with them.
Two things I can’t abide, people who abuse animals and those that abuse or harm children in any way. Those are people that should be locked up for life. Let them rot.
I hope poor Freya heals up and finds a loving home where she will be spoiled the rest of her days.
Freyja deserves love, please focus all the love and pawsitive attention on her. Help is here. Now and in the future. We have a sexual offenders registry, now we need one for animals. That’s the only attention that the abusers deserve. They already have legal consequences from the authorities. May Freyja live on furever!
Please let me have 5 minutes with whoever did this to a beautiful defenseless cat. I guarantee he or they will NEVER hurt another animal again.
Poor, poor baby….my heart is broken in 10 000 pieces. I just cannot understand how any human can do this to an innocent, blameless animal. May karma or God deal with these humans in the most severe way…???
Hope she gets better asap cant believe someone hurt poor animal. Ur in my prayers
The fosterer and her boyfriend should have their necks broken. Anyone who abuses an animal or child should be executed before they go up the food chain.
If I lived closer I would give this precious angel a furever home where she would be spoiled, pampered and loved treated like the Queen she is. I am horrified by what happened to her. Both humans should be prosecuted to the fullest extent and then some. I pray they never have children. If you do this to a defenseless aninal, what would yoy do to a defenseless baby. God watch over you Freya and help you to heal.
Harming animals is often a step towards domestic violence. This is such a common correlation, statistically, that it should be treated as a red flag for potential future violence. People should have mandatory treatment for emotional problems if convicted of animal abuse or other acts causing harm when acting out of anger or stress.
(4) A person is guilty of aggravated cruelty to an animal if the person:
(a) tortures an animal;
(b) administers, or causes to be administered, poison or a poisonous substance to an animal; or
(c) kills an animal or causes an animal to be killed without having a legal privilege to do so.
(5) Except as provided in Subsection (6) or Section 76-9-301.7, a violation of Subsection (4) is:
(a) a class A misdemeanor if committed intentionally or knowingly;
(b) a class B misdemeanor if committed recklessly; and
(c) a class C misdemeanor if committed with criminal negligence.
Class A gets anywhere from zero to 365 days sentencing. Angry people just sitting in jail do not get better. They need to be socialized, taught empathy and social rules just like feral animals.
Glad they were able to help Freyja. It’s terrible what happened to her, but before we all pass judgement on the fosterer and her boyfriend we aren’t completely privy to what happened or if there were medical conditions involved. The boyfriend could be abusive, have a sleep disorder, PTSD, or have been jolted awake by something like the cat running across him and tossed the cat across the room as a reflex reaction. If he’s a big strong dude that could have easily injured a small cat. May the investigation into the incident help determine the truth of the matter and may Freyja find a wonderful and loving home.
Yeah Right! That’s it…exactly what happened. Hey, I was interrupted in my “sleep” and broke that cats’s legs accidentally among the other injuries. You are CLUELESS!
Heart wrenching. I knew better than to read this, because it will bother me for months but I’m a strong believer in karma. Oh baby girl Freya, your spirit was broken. Its okay girl no more pain now you can run free. The nightmare is over.
They need to both rot in jail. Beautiful Freya is out of pain now and is running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Thankfully she was showered with love the last days of her life. I really want the names of these people. If they did this to beautiful Freya they can hurt another fur baby or even a child.
This behavior is sociopathic and they are monsters.
Freda, you took a piece of my heart with you when you left. You will never be forgotten.
Poor Freya has crossed the bridge ??. Just too much to overcome for this Angel. ??♥️
Sick bastards need to be put away for good. We need stricter laws to protect these innocent lives. If we had stricter laws, just maybe these sick bastards would not have done what they did. Rot in hell and Freya, I hope you are in heaven running with other kitties. You didn’t deserve this.
Unfortunately, she did pass away…
Freya passed away. The case is closed due to lack of evidence. And the rescue is not allowed to give out the fosterers names even to other rescues.
Unfortunately Freya has died?. And after going in front of the judge the Foster’s that did this to her were let go. The judge ruled it as circumstantial, claiming that anyone who had access to the home could have done this. The fosters denied and they were set free. The case is now been closed. This is unacceptable we must make this his nation wide as possible Utah you need to change your animal cruelty laws!!! #justiceforfreya #inactfreyaslaw
