How do you know if a cat chooses you? If the so-called ‘cat distribution system’ is real, will you know when you’ve been chosen? Signs can be subtle, but they can also be ridiculously obvious. We often see people online saying they feel jealous when somebody gets chosen by a cat.

‘When will it be my turn?’ they ask. “Why are you so lucky?”

Of course, sometimes the cat distribution system is not so lucky and isn’t working at all. For example, a friendly cat that seems to have chosen you – but turns out to be somebody’s beloved pet. If in doubt, it’s easy enough for a vet to scan for a microchip. And instead of waiting, you can always get chosen by a cat at a rescue or shelter near you at any time!

But there really is something meowgical about the times when a cat just shows up out of nowhere and really does seem to choose you.

Signs a Cat Chooses You: A Potted Kitten?

Greenpoint Cats, a Brooklyn rescue, shared the moment when a woman got a big surprise. Looking out on the fire escape, she suddenly had a new plant. On closer inspection, a tabby was curled up in her flower pot!

“What should you do if you wake up to a cat sleeping in a pot outside your window on a chilly winter morning? 🪴 Rescue it, of course! And that’s exactly what happened to Dora, a four-month-old kitten who fell asleep in a flower pot and woke up to the friendly faces of the good humans who brought her inside,” shared Greenpoint Cats.

As you can see in the videos below, Dora was the friendliest little explorer. She didn’t hesitate to climb right up the screen and in the window. Considering how friendly she was, it seems she must have been someone’s pet. Yet when the vet checked, there was no microchip. Plus, she wasn’t spayed.

“All you need is a bathroom (to keep a new cat or kitten safely separated from resident cats)! A quick trip to the vet revealed she wasn’t spayed or microchipped, nor are there any flyers or posts connecting her with an owner who misses her, so her past will remain a mystery, but her future with us is bright ☀️ Welcome, Dora! 🥹,” they said.

Dora Was a Pure Delight and Easy to Keep Safe

As the rescuers kept an eye out for flyers, it was easy enough to keep Dora safe in a bathroom, and she was so playful and great fun!

After reaching out to rescue groups, Dora got veterinary care and found a wonderful foster home with a friendly dog. So, she definitely chose the right fire escape on which to become a potted plant that morning!

“Her rescuers did the right thing (brought her inside) and then figured out the rest (bringing her to a local vet and reaching out to local rescue groups to help get her a home!),” Greenpoint Cats wrote.
