Rescuers save a kitten named Honda, rolling around on the ground to free him from a car engine. And that was in between caring for countless other cats needing help.
Rescuers from Philadelphia, Kris and Kia Papiernik, opened Kolony Kats years ago. Since then, they have focused on TNR (trap, neuter, return) efforts and caring for over 70 cats in 12 locations. They include cats like the cuties below:
“Ariel, Sebastian & Hank the Hunk 💛💛💛”
They also rescue cats and save kittens they encounter. Unfortunately, there are always more coming, but with TNR, they can make a big difference.
“We try to stick strictly to TNR and feral feeding, but there are always exceptions to the rule,” says Kris. “We seek rescue placement if we come across a kitty that appears sick, senior, or just not thriving outside. Of course, kittens go to rescue as well. We don’t want to see kittens grow up on the streets. While kittens are cute, we work hard advocating and being active in TNR to prevent them. The most rewarding part of rescuing cats is seeing them go from trying to survive on the rough streets to being a pampered indoor kitty.”
Hopefully, living as pampered house cats will soon be the fate of two kittens the rescuers saved.
Rescuers Save Honda the Kitten from a…Honda
You never know where you will encounter kittens requiring rescue in the city. One day, while feeding the feral cats they care for, the rescuers from Kolony Kats heard meowing from a car.
“Meet Honda! 🐈🚗 VOLUME UP! We heard a kitten meowing from under the hood of a car today, along our feeding route,” they shared.

A Mechanic Kitten in the Making
Determined, they worked to get the kitten named Honda free. And he is simply precious.
“It took about an hour, lots of rolling around on the ground, sweat and dirt, but this little boy is safe!”
Honda was completely tame and friendly with his rescuers.
“He is a little scared, but has allowed us to handle and pet him with no issues.”
Now, the women hoped that someone would come forward to foster the sweet baby in the Philly area.
Kittens Reproducing Like Gremlins
Rescuing kittens in the Philly area is a never-ending job requiring many different volunteer groups to work together. But, the kittens keep appearing, as if like Gremlins. A day after sharing the story of Honda, he had a little friend they called Bob The Builder.
“Are kittens like Gremlins, if you feed them after midnight they multiply?!?!” they joked. “Stay tuned for the story of how Honda now has a little brother named Bob The Builder….”
Honda and Bob the Builder
With all the rescuing of cats of all ages, they haven’t had any time left to tell how Bob arrived. And then, both kittens needed immediate treatment for the dreaded and very contagious Ringworm. With proper nutrition, isolation in a clean environment, gloves, and daily treatment, most kittens fully overcome the fungal infection, as many foster providers know. So it’s generally not as scary as it sounds, and most rescuers will contend with Ringworm at some point. Everything must be sterilized, and it’s a hassle, but in the end, you get through it and are rewarded with happy, healthy kittens.
Fortunately, it looks like rescuers from another group New Pawsibilities of NJ, came forward to offer help. It takes a village, but with TNR efforts, each cat spayed or neutered means thousands upon thousands of kittens like these won’t suffer and require saving.
Babies Having Babies
Kolony Kats says they are seeing very young kittens giving birth to kittens.
“Babies having babies. This is all we have been seeing lately. So many YOUNG cats (equivalent to teenagers) that have already become mothers,” they shared.
The kitten below is one such example they encountered, placing a temporary collar to determine if she belonged to someone.
“This little lady recently started showing up at one of our feeding spots. We noticed she was actively nursing, but she never lead us to her kittens. She naps after she eats, every single day! We placed a paper collar on her today in hopes that she has an owner and they will contact us. If they do, we will offer resources for the kittens and free spay and vaccinations for mom. If no one contacts us, we will scoop this lady up at some point soon and have her spayed anyway.”
Why TNR Can Be the ‘Ultimate Gift’ for Feral Cats
With TNR, they say it’s the ultimate gift for feral cats. In addition to preventing kittens, it also helps adult cats avoid many potentially life-threatening health complications. Not to mention, it can also greatly reduce fights and resulting injuries. Plus, it means fewer complaints due to noisy cats engaging in such fights.
“We already have over 400,000 cats living on the streets of Philadelphia, we don’t WANT or NEED anymore! If you are feeding cats and not fixing them, please reconsider. TNR is the ultimate gift that you can give to any free roaming cat. It is a gift that lasts a lifetime. It is the key to them living a much happier and healthier life.”
