It’s heartbreaking to see animals suffering. But when there are people in the rescue world that refuse to give up on these souls, it warms the heart. For one tiny cat later named Toast, that loving attention was lifesaving.

The only burnt Toast you’ll ever ask for second helpings of.

Amanda Hodder of Kitten Rescue Life in southern California is always willing to help animals in need. So when she was contacted about a young kitten who was suffering, she jumped into action. The fire department had found the tiny victim in the Redlands.

This tiny kitten was found in the aftermath of an encampment fire, suffering from severe burns across her little body. She suffered wounds to her face around her eyes, her ear tips, and her paw pads. She’s already been hospitalized for two days and she is currently en route to our vet for at least another day of medical boarding. We don’t know her story before that moment, but we do know this: she is a survivor, and we are committed to giving her every chance at a full recovery.

Toast is only nine weeks old, but the injuries she’s sustained are heartbreaking. Despite the pain, Toast has shown incredible strength and resilience, reaching out for love and comfort when we thought she might be too frightened to do so.

Once they were able to get her checked out by the veterinarian, they knew her recovery would be long and arduous.

Even knowing what lie ahead for the sweet black kitten, everyone who met her was more determined than ever to help. It’s amazing how sweet and trusting animals can be even during the healing process and level of pain involved. They truly are inspiring.

Yesterday she was brought in to our vet who examined her and realized the severity of her wounds. She has 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over her body. These burns are on her ears, around her eyes and nose, tummy, tail, and the bottom of all four feet. She is missing toenails, has abscessing between all of her digits, her feet are painfully swollen and she had a fever on intake. She will need to have an anesthetized debridement. After that she will be bandaged for quite some time while her skin fully recovers.

She did eat last night and this morning which is great. Toast is receiving daily care, including pain management and wound treatments, but the medical bills will add up quickly and we need your continued support to ensure she gets all the care she deserves.

Each day there are positive updates for Toast and we hope they continue.

And even with any setbacks, it just solidifies Amanda’s resolve in helping these needy souls

A sweet little video of our Toasty Girl from the lovely ladies at our vet. Her burns are very bright and red today as her tissue that was damaged sloughs off and makes way for the tissue underneath to begin healing. She is probably going to look a lot worse before she looks better. Her road to healing may be a long one but that’s okay, we’ve got time.

By mid-November 2024, Toast was able to finally leave the vet hospital and settle into foster care. Her legs were wrapped to assist in the healing process, yet she proves black cats are seriously the most loving felines imaginable.

Thanks to your incredible support, Toast has been receiving the best possible care, and we’re seeing wonderful progress every day. She’s eating well, getting lots of cuddles, and takes medicine like a champ.

My first sleepover with Toast was a success! We had a rough start. On the ride home she pooped, so she soiled her bandages right away. By the time we got home we had to remove her wraps and replace them. Something I was hoping we wouldn’t have to do for a while. It was pretty traumatic for us both, I was so afraid of hurting her. My dad was a great help.

Her current at home routine is wound care twice a day that consists of warm water with a gentle soap and two different ointments, one for her wounds and one for her eyes. She gets antibiotics and pain meds every 12 hours. She has special medicated wraps on her legs which are covered in bandages. The bandages can be changed whenever she soils them.

At her follow up appointment though on the 18th, a devastating decision will now have to be made in the future. Poor Toast will need to have one of her legs amputated that was too damaged to heal. However, tripod cats are absolutely adorable and able bodied so at her young age, she’ll likely adapt with no issues.

How you can help support Toast’s recovery and KRL’s ongoing community efforts.

The sweet feline has come so far already in her healing journey with love and medical care. But it will be a long road to recovery, only possible due to a heartwarming outpouring of support.
