Two of the most well known, popular destinations when going to Paris are Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower. But did you know there is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Butte Montmartre?! Bonus for cat lovers; there roughly 50 cats that have chosen the location for their home. Montmartre Cemetery, established in 1825 is a final resting place for many notable people. And these cemetery cats create a peaceful allure, to what might otherwise be seen as somber into a place of peace and curiosity.
Cats are feline good about the neighbors they keep.
It’s a common belief that cats can sense “good” people. Perhaps that can be attributed to people after they pass on too? More than once throughout history, cats have inspired some of the most influential humans to have ever lived.
“Because of the cemetery’s location in Montmartre, a neighborhood known for its artistic history, it became the burial ground for many creatives including painters, poets, writers, singers, dancers, composers, and actors. Some of the most famous graves in Paris can be found in Montmartre Cemetery.”
Cemetery’s are they spooky or “catagious”?
Immediately, what is the first thing you think of when you hear the word cemetery? Perhaps dark, spooky or haunted? However, The Montmartre will surprise you. Because you won’t find ghosts, or hear scary howling noises here. Instead, the spookiest thing you will find here are cats! Cats that may be running amok, hiding or sunbathing on a tombstone. Quite possibly even hissing at one another, to the people walking by, or meowing in hopes for a snack!
With close to 30 acres of land, the cats who have chosen to make this their home, have lots of room to explore, hide and sunbathe on the various tombs within the cemetery.

Where did these curious cats come from, and why did they choose this cemetery as their home? That question remains a mystery. What we do know, is over time this colony of cats have become well established, cared for and even enjoyed. While we all may not get a chance to enjoy this peaceful Parisian retreat, we can certainly explore our own local cemeteries.
