Poor Spoona needs to find a new home soon. This 13-year-old calico cat has found herself in a tough situation for any feline. Not to mention that she weighs in at a painful 30 pounds! Oh and she’s a polydactyl with cute little ‘thumb hole’ gloves to match.

Because although Spoona had a loving human once, she passed away.

It was devastating cancer that took her owner from her at only 43 years old. So no, she didn’t just abandon her cat while battling the overwhelming and torturous disease. But in the heartbreaking turn of events, there was not a plan made for Spoona once she lost her only trusted human. And when no one from her family was able to take in the senior cat who will need to be an only cat, she was surrendered to the shelter. No matter how many humans try to show her love, the strange place with noise and smells from other animals is too scary. So Fairhaven Animal Control and Shelter are determined to find her a peaceful home atmosphere.

Her owner was very sick and was unable to take care of her anymore. She’s 13 years old and doesn’t understand why she is here. Most shelters would not give her a chance but that’s not what we do here. She’ll need a quiet home with very patient people.

While we don’t know all the facts and cannot judge anyone, her or her family, we can help Spoona find her forever home! She will require a dedicated human servant to help her on her weight loss journey too. Which is absolutely possible but MUST be done slowly and steadily.

It’s Possible She Will Open Up Her Heart

Over the weeks she’s been at the shelter, Spoona’s personality is begging to be let loose. And as a calico cat, she sure does have a big one!

She is currently on gabapentin to help her feel comfortable as she came to us weighing 30lbs and you could see the sadness and pain in her eyes. She comes off as mean due to her hissing and growling but it truly is just her way of expressing fear and discomfort. She was with the same person for 13 years and ended up in a very noisy and loud shelter being overweight which isn’t ideal for anybody.

Many shelters would not have even given her the chance because of her age and hissing antics. [But] we know there is a big heart inside of her chest she just needs help finding it again!
We would love to see her in a safe and quiet home with a new human who is willing to give her a chance. She may not be a snuggly lap cat and that’s ok!! She still deserves a chance and love with the right person.

Personally being involved in TNR, we know that once a cat finds a comforting place, their love can completely blossom. So we’re crossing fingers, paws and even eyes, that once Spoona finds her humans. And when she begins losing weight, perhaps she’ll do a complete flip flop into a lap cat?! But even if she’s just content to comfortable from across the room, she deserves all the love she’ll allow.

Be sure to follow Fairhaven Animal Control and Shelter in Fairhaven, Massachusetts and contact them directly if you are interested in aspiring her. And congrats to whomever wins this fluffy ladies big heart!
