Charlie, the ‘megachonker,’ is nine years old and weighed 26.5 pounds when he arrived with rescuers at Feline Friends Chicago. His former family had him declawed on his front paws, unfortunately often leading to permanent painful mobility problems. But for Charlie, it’s his back that causes him discomfort. He has difficulty playing like he wants.
Due to the extra pounds, the friendly Charlie couldn’t bathe himself properly either. While he loves for someone to brush him, the rescuers say:
“He just doesn’t feel much like catting because he’s so heavy.”
Fortunately, he was in good health when he arrived at the rescue. To remain so, they knew he needed to turn his life around. So, they’re looking for a different kind of adopter, one who also wants to be a personal trainer for a feline!
We’ve previously shared the story of a 42-pound, ‘lovable honkin’ chonk,’ Patches, undergoing a remarkable transfurmation thanks to his new mom. The kitty’s weight-loss journey is inspurrational for thousands worldwide, but it takes a lot of patience, determination, and an informed plan. Reaching the ideal goal could take years.
Note: it’s important to know that one should always consult a veterinarian if you’re helping a cat lose significant weight. Each cat is different, with unique health and dietary needs, and cats can only safely lose weight very gradually. (Usually no more than a pound per month.) Losing weight too rapidly could lead to liver disease (hepatic lipidosis), which can be fatal.
Charlie Dropped 5 Pounds in 5 Months
After arriving with the rescuers, Charlie made great progress, losing a pound per month for five months. So, he’s already well on his way to a new life.
“Being nine, Charlies decided to turn his life around so that he becomes buff, sassy, and active like other middle-aged cats. Charlie has lost over 5 lbs in the last 5 months and now tips the scales at 21 lbs,” the rescue shared on Charlie’s adoption profile.
Seeking a Feline Personal Trainer/Furever Family
After a purrfect start to his weight-loss journey, Charlie is ready to find his family dedicated to helping him achieve a healthy weight for the rest of his life.
“He wants a personal trainer to help him continue his fitness program. Requirements include being serious about a cat diet, exercising, and understanding that obese cats need to lose weight slowly, under veterinary care, to avoid liver disease,” they shared.
The right personal trainer will know that it’s best to resist when Charlie meows for extra treats.
“He wants a human that will make him have a better life, so Charlie can make their life better. He accepts that this means ‘tough love,’ especially when he’s really, REALLY hungry,” they explained.
Those in the Chicago area who want to learn more can find out the details on Feline Friends Chicago’s Facebook and Instagram pages. An adoption profile is here. They’re also always looking for foster homes.
