Valentine’s Day: It can be wonderful for those in love, but for others, it can be a bother, a day you’d rather think about something else instead, for instance, neutering your ex. That’s the tongue-in-cheek idea behind a hilarious campaign to help feral cats started by rescuers in New Jersey.

Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Blackwood is making news for their volunteer’s funny anti-Valentine idea that is actually incredibly loving toward cats.

For the bargain price of $50, you can “neuter your ex” for Valentine’s Day. And by your ex, we’re talking about a feral cat named “in honor” of your ex. The tagline is hilarious: “Because some things shouldn’t breed.”

In the comments, some wanted to know if they could get a picture of their sponsored kitty.

“This is awesome. I definitely want to help out while enjoying a little evil humor at the expense of a certain someone. Can I get a picture of the cat I sponsor with this? I’ll enjoy it far more than any picture of my ex,” said Alan G.

Don’t worry, Rodney! He’ll be released after his neuter day and be much happier and live longer.

In response, the rescue said they would be posting pictures, and here are the first kitties via their Instagram.

What a great way to help the cats in New Jersey, and other rescues say they want to try the idea, too! And the story got picked up in the news across the country.

Spay or Neuter Your Ex and Send Love to Cats Instead!

Although the title refers to neutering, you can sponsor spaying or neutering a colony cat named for your ex’s first name or nickname. It’s not intended to stir up drama with your ex but rather, to help kitties.

After the kitty is sterilized, they are returned to their familiar territories as part of TNR (trap, neuter, return) efforts. As always, some friendly feral cats have a chance to become house cats, too!

That way, the kitty bearing your ex’s name will actually have a much nicer life. So, although it’s a funny idea, it’s really a loving gesture. It reduces aggressive behavior and fighting, increases lifespans drastically, improves health and prevents untold thousands of kittens from suffering and dying in pain. We’d say that’s a meow-velous way to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

Suppose you get a laugh that helps you release toxic memories of your ex on February 14th; then even better. Let all that baggage go, and know that you’re helping cats in a wonderful, loving way.

We’d love to see this idea carry over all year long, because spaying and neutering is the best way to prevent suffering all year.

Retri”poo”tion for Valentine’s Day?

In 2021, the Lexington Humane Society in Kentucky started a similar anti-Valentine’s Day campaign. For a donation, they would write your ex’s name and place it in one of the rescued cat’s litter boxes.

“Get your retripootion today by simply making a donation on this post – it’s easy! Don’t forget to either leave a comment or send us a private message with the name you would like written. This promotion will end on Friday, February 12th, at 1 pm, but not to worry, our kitties will continue to fart for your broken heart through Valentine’s Day. Litter boxes won’t be removed until February 15th!” they shared.

This year, the Humane Society has another idea, too, bringing adoptable animals to your workplace for a “Cuddlegram” on Valentine’s Day (The deadline for registration is February 5th.).

Love Stinks

In a similar smelly fashion, The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) has an affordable “Love Stinks” campaign for Valentine’s. You guessed it: the rescued cats will poop on your ex’s name.

It’s been so successful they’ve had donations from almost 50 states.

“Valentine’s Day isn’t for everyone…but EVERYONE can appreciate this!” they shared.

How about expanding this idea? Litter boxes dedicated to your former boss, job, tenant, landlord, etc.,” commented Diane L.

The rescue says it can be any name, whoever you think deserves to be remembered not so fondly.

“For a $5 donation, we will write the name of an ex-friend, lover, or anything you wish to bury in a litter box for our shelter cats to poop all over! How’s that for stinky retripootion?” the website states.

Below, you can see how the campaign is going so far via TikTok.

The proof is in the pooping! Here’s a video they shared showing The Unlikely Strummers performing ‘Love Stinks’ as they put the campaign into action. It looks like they’re having a blast, both figuratively and literally!

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day from the Cole and Marmalade Family!
