Here’s a wonderful update on Mama Freckles and her Easter Egg kittens in Alexandria, Virginia. We previously shared the story of Asa, a foster volunteer at the Animal Welfare League who took in pregnant Freckles.

It was the first time Assa fostered a Torbie mama cat and kittens at home. Before she knew it, the eggies arrived, mostly on Easter Day. Soon, the rescuer took the cutest pictures of the kittens with little baskets of Easter eggs.

Kittens’ names:

  • Egg
  • Sunny
  • Souffle
  • Frittata
  • Omelet
  • Bennie (for eggs Benedict)

Here’s Freckles making a Frittata, showing how the kitten grew in 10 weeks.

“Freckles’ homemade Frittata at 2 weeks old and 10 weeks old ❤️.”

Fortunately, 2-year-old Freckles was the perfect mama, making the experience wonderful for Asa. All the adorable kittens arrived healthy and strong and thrived from the start, an ideal situation.

“Needless to say, I’ll be fostering more pregnant mamas in the future. :),” Asa said at the time.

What Happened to Mama Freckles and the Easter Eggs?

Not only was this fostering experience ideal and beautiful, but Asa shared great (and bittersweet) news about Freckles in August. It was about five months after she gave birth.

This kitty has found a home and will remain with Egg, now called Cookie! Egg was bonded with her mother, so it’s another ideal situation.

Goodbye is the Goal for Fosters

Asa shared a very sweet story about Freckles and how hard it was to say goodbye. However, when you foster, “Goodbye is the goal,” although sometimes there’s a fail (or two!).

“If you love someone, set them free…and that’s exactly what happened. Freckles headed off to her furever home yesterday, 🥲” Asa shared. “She had been with us for close to 5 months so needless to say, this goodbye hurt.”

Below, you can see how close the rescuer and foster cat had become over the months.

Freckles Was the Ideal Mom

This cat was the ideal mom to her litter, making everything so much easier. It’s why rescuers always try to keep the kittens with the mother whenever possible. Of course, not all cats will tend to their babies, particularly rescues that are kittens themselves or sick and malnourished cats trying to survive on the streets.

Now, Asa wanted to find Freckles a home where she could be “spoiled for the rest of her life.” A couple of potential homes fell, though, but at last, Freckles found the right home at last.

“Not only was she just the sweetest cat ever, but she was also such an amazing mom; she immediately put on her mama hat the moment she gave birth and I didn’t have to worry about the eggies at all, all thanks to her. I’m so lucky to have had her as my first pregnant foster because she now most certainly won’t be my last. ♥️”

Mama and Her Youngest Egg

When Freckle’s new family came to take her home with Egg, Asa says she was unexpectedly emotional. The bond with Freckles was so strong.

“I was doing such a good job of not crying over a foster but this one, unsurprisingly, broke my one year long streak 🫣,” wrote Asa. “I’d also never cried in front of my foster’s new family (I’ve always managed to evade the scene before the waterworks kicked in 🙈) so that was rather embarassing 😅.”

Mother cat named Freckles,

We’re sure the new family was touched to see the love between Asa and Freckles. Now, Freckles will enjoy a happy life with her baby Egg. Egg, the last born, was adopted first among the Easter Eggs.

At the time, Egg’s new human, Rebecca, said:

“She’s so gentle and playful. Hopefully the others find a home soon too. I may adopt another if not!”

As it turned out, she did later adopt Egg’s mother!! We hope they have a wonderful life together.

Omelette and Frittata went home together. Sunny and Soufflé went to another home. Also, Bennie found a home with other furry sibling cats and dogs.

“As painful as this goodbye was, this was the best possible outcome that could have happened and I am so, so grateful for their new family for keeping these two together,” she said.

A Happy Life Awaits the Easter Egg Kittens and Their Mama

Thanks to the rescuer, the whole family of Easter Eggs will have wonderful lives and bring their humans so much joy. By saying goodbye, the foster mom can do it all over again and save more precious kittens.

All the kittens,
