There is a sweetness to raising foster kittens because they are just so beautiful and innocent. It’s a new experience for Asa, who lives in the D.C. area of Alexandria, Virginia. Precious mama kitty Freckles is the first pregnant kitty Asa has cared for and it’s been a delightful experience.
The gorgeous cat with deep green eyes arrived at the Animal Welfare League, in Arlington, Virginia, and was about 5 to 6 weeks pregnant when she arrived at the shelter where Asa volunteers. Asa says she thought she’d have a bit more time before Freckles went into labor. She was a little nervous since this is the first time she’d cared for a pregnant kitty in her home. But this sweet Torbie mama had a few surprises in store and after a few weeks gave birth almost immediately! The good news is the whole thing went off without a hitch.
“I was waiting for signs of her going into labor, anticipating a day or two until it actually happens but nope,” Asa says. “She went into labor 10-20 minutes after the first sign. She was such a good mama throughout the entire process!!! I didn’t have to intervene at any point and everything went so smooth.”
Freckles Is One Excellent Mama.
The birth of these six beautiful kittens was “seamless and easy” and “Mama Freckles and her kittens are all thriving and doing amazing!” she says.
“Needless to say, I’ll be fostering more pregnant mamas in the future. :),” Asa says.
Freckles gave birth on Easter (one was born a tiny bit earlier, on Saturday) so Asa decided to give them all egg-themed names and she likes to call them her little eggs. There’s Bennie (for eggs Benedict, of course), Frittata, Sunny, Omelette, Souffle, and Egg.
“Happy one week old birthday, little sploots!!! 🎂🥳 Mama Freckles and her babies are all doing so well ☺️ They’re starting to become quite the opinionated bunch, I’ll need to somehow keep up with all their demands! 😅,” Asa posted on Instagram.

“Little Eggs turned 3 weeks old yesterday!! 🥚”
Below are “Egg,” Asa says, “is the runt, tiny but mighty.” and Bennie: “Bennie is the firstborn, and also the largest.”
Below, Frittata is a cute slightly pale-colored ginger kitty.
“Frittata loved every second of the #3weeksold photoshoot. 📸🥚”
Whereas Sunny is the darker-colored ginger below.
“Modeling is hard work. 😮💨 Leave it up to Sunny to fall asleep during the #3weeksold photoshoot 😅”
Then There Was Kona.
As the kittens began tumbling and playing, they initially made friends with Kona a cute little tan dog, but worried Mama Freckles is making everyone keep their distance. Initially, the situation started out warm and friendly, with the kittens playing around Kona’s feet and being just as cute as can be.
Asa says she’s helping Freckles feel more secure with the Kona situation.
“We’ve backpedaled a bit in this regard — babies seemed to be really interested in Kona when they were just starting to wobble around and explore the home but now that they’re older (they’re 4 weeks old, turning 5 weeks this weekend) and see how protective and hissy is towards my residents (which include at least one other pooch and two cute foster bunnies), I think the babies are feeding off her energy. They’ve started to puff up seeing Kona. But since we’re currently working on weaning, I’ll start separating the babies from mama more so hopefully Kona will be able to win their little hearts back with some alone time.”
Gentle Kona obviously loves cats, as you can see in the clip below so hopefully, this will do the trick!
All kittens are adorable but I have to admit I fell in love with these adorable babies. Asa’s Instagram is full of photos and videos of her sweet fosters and cute homebodies.
We’re beyond thrilled that mama Freckles met such a kind humom. She and her adorable eggs will have a loving life, which they richly deserve.
