It’s a giant hurdle for most kittens: climbing the stairs for the first time.
As cat lovers know, the stairs generally become a favorite place for many adult cats to hang out, hiding to ambush your legs, swat from the railings, or scratch the carpet. Otherwise, they always seem to choose the top of the stairs as their preferred napping place. So cat lovers know they better watch their feet at all times!
Other times, cats take on their liquid form, melting their way downstairs for fun. In the absence of trees to climb, the stairs offer the next best thing. Next on the list must be the bathroom, particularly when occupied.
But in the first months, stairs must seem like sheer mountain cliffs to a tiny kitten. Nevertheless, they show such fearless determination, giving it all they have to reach the next level.
Momma Helps Kitten Going Up Stairs
Watching a kitten climb the stairs for the first time is both amusing and inspiring. No matter what the obstacle, these tiny fluffballs are packed with willpower and the drive to overcome. So, seeing such tiny creatures fearlessly face life’s challenges reminds us that we, too, have what it takes from the beginning.

Below, a patient momma cat encourages their baby on the stairs each step of the way. The momma cat stands on the stair above the kitten. Each time, she looks back as if to say, “You got this!” Soon, she feels confident that her baby has the hang of it, taking a final look at the top. There, the others in the litter are waiting and watching for their sibling.

Kittens Going Down Stairs
While going up the stairs is one of the biggest challenges for a tiny kitten, the reverse can be much trickier. Fortunately, kittens are incredibly resilient little guys. Thus, they may take a tumble but get right back on their feet.
Below, @Kiiten_Heaven shares a video of an adorable litter of black and white kitten’s first experience going down some carpeted stairs. As you can see, the kittens, which are a little over a month old, can’t resist the challenge, mewing as they go.
“This is the first time the little kittens were allowed on the stairs. They went wild !!😂 Mama cat was not too happy. Even though it was quite funny, they will no longer be allowed on the stairs until they are older. No baby kittens were harmed during the making of this video😊”
Once reaching the bottom, what’s left but to climb right back up again?
