Although you might not know his name—or are confused on how to pronounce it—you definitely know his face. Whether you fell in love with him as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, or you finally found a superhero in Aquaman that made your knees weak, Jason Momoa’s fun to look at.
But do you know much about the man behind those muscles and smile that makes your heart skip a beat?
Be purrpared to like him even more than you already did. Jason Momoa’s a lover of all animals, but he has a soft spot in his heart for the feline and canine kind.
Aside from being easy on the eyes, the Hawaiian native is an all-around great human being. Born Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa, he is truly passionate about the earth, the welfare of animals, and being a devoted dad, and stepdad, and great husband.
The character that cemented his fate as Hollywood’s baddest beefcake, Khal Drogo. Jason admits he knew his character’s line limitations: “I mean, where do you put Drogo? He’s not going in a rom-com. No one even knew I spoke English.”
(But many of us remember Jason from Stargate Atlantis, too!)
He has a pretty interesting Instagram, Pride Of Gypsies, where he gives his fans a glimpse into his daily life that is anything but your typical Hollywood movie star. Jason Momoa is constantly advocating against plastic and raising awareness for other important causes, making it his mission to help preserve the earth. He goes to movies with his kids all the time, and tries to spend every second he can with them when he’s not filming or traveling. He is crazy about his wife, Lisa Bonet, who was actually his childhood crush. And praises his stepdaughter Zoe Kravitz (daughter of Lenny Kravitz), and drinks beer and whiskey like a champ.
This is a man who is unapologetically himself and doesn’t feel the need to try and be perfect or always watch his mouth and what he says. He’s passionate, gorgeous, kind, and funny.
Jason Momoa, can we clone you?
Jason doesn’t care about being a heartthrob, or about fancy cars and homes, he’s down-to-earth and happy that he can give his family a wonderful life thanks to those big Hollywood paydays.
We know that Jason often has a scrunchie on his wrist for that messy mane of his, but have you ever seen him actually use one before?
Esquire got down to the bottom of this question in a fun little video they call “The Scrunchie Challenge”—take a look!
Now 40, Jason’s path to success didn’t happen overnight. He got his first real acting gig in 1999 on Baywatch Hawaii, but it wasn’t until he made it onto Game of Thrones that he started to really grab the attention of Hollywood. And why not? He’s a total beefcake in a day and age of prissy pretty boys, and he is actually a good dude who stands up for what he believes in—and inspires others to do the same!
Clearly Esquire magazine knows the star power that Jason holds. That’s why he’s their next cover star. And it should come as no surprise that the issue created quite a buzz online. I know I wanted to see it!
Oh, and did we mention that he throws axes on live television for charity? Of course I included the footage for you…Enjoy.
Whether or not you’re a big fan of Jason Momoa’s, you must admit that there’s an endearing and humble quality to him. It’s refreshing to see in a time when so many are consumed by looks or self benefit. Jason is just having a good time, and lending his star power to help others. And if you ask me, that makes him super cool in my book.
When asked by the magazine about his career and his slow rise to fame, Jason retains his humility just as he always does. (WARNING: Adult language to follow)
“I think of Brad Pitt as a movie star. You know what I mean? Like George Clooney is a movie star. Those guys are like, boom.”
“I would never be able to handle what he does,” Momoa said, reflecting on how his career had a slower burn.
“He’s so fucking talented, man. I don’t know. I’m a little dumber, needed some time. Which is probably the best for me, because it would have been bad if it happened when I was younger. I just would have fucked it all up.”
