Deaf Cat Named Pistachio Chooses Couple Walking Their Cats to Rescue Him

A stray cat named Pistachio living at an apartment complex in Atlanta found the perfect couple to rescue him. It was a calm evening when mom to two popular online cats, Almond and Cashie, took her furkids for a walk in their stroller. Yes, it’s a thing and it’s adorable. Just a simple walk through their apartment complex turned into a mission. Because out of the darkness came a loving gray tabby and stopped them in their tracks; literally.

And while Almond and Cashie were happy to hiss their opinions wearily, Pistachio quickly won her over.

She called her boyfriend to come down and meet the cat. As their new friend easily melted into his arms, they figured with his clean fur, he perhaps belonged to a resident. He followed them on their walk for a bit but then disappeared under a car and into the darkness. But the next morning, when he ran up to her again they grabbed a carrier. He was happy to be loved on once more and accept food, so they headed off to the vet to get him checked out.

We found Pistachio, a gentle loving stray cat, wandering alone and hungry outside our apartment. He has quickly stolen our hearts with his sweet, trusting nature. We believe Pistachio may be deaf, as he does not respond to sounds around him, and we want to make sure he gets a thorough examination by a professional vet to determine if he truly cannot hear or if he has an untreated ear infection causing his silence.

Because the shelter was full, Pistachio was welcomed into their home as a foster cat.

The local shelter is completely booked until the end of August for free spay/neuter appointments. [But] we’ve been told we can have him fixed sooner at our own expense through a local vet. We want to give Pistachio the chance to live a healthy, safe, and happy life without adding to the stray population.

Not being a shelter, they started a fundraiser to cover the costs of Pistachio’s vet needs. With the help of more caring animal lovers, they have been able to raise over $5,000!

We want to thank everyone so far for your generous donations for Pistachio! Pistachio will need to be sedated for even minor assessments due to him being deaf. His other senses are at an all-time which is normal for deaf cats. When he feels, he feels 10 times more than a normal cat. Pistachio has a swollen left paw that the vet thinks could be an injury from being outside. He will get that checked next week as well and if the swelling hasn’t gone down, we will do x-rays. As you know, veterinarian services are not cheap and we are so grateful for your help.

Pistachio deserves the best care and the best life from here on out and we plan to give him that.

He is scheduled for his sedated lab work and then a few hours later if the results are okay, they will proceed with neutering and assessing the paw. He will need pain medication, but since we cannot give him any medicine by mouth, he will have to have an expensive long acting pain shot that will last 3 days. He did have a small setback when he had a reaction to a medication, but with love and care he’s all better. Out of the bathroom quarantine after 5 days, he excitedly explored their bedroom and the Kitty TV (window).

Almond and Cashie remain weary of their temporary house guest. So the many, many comments hoping for a ‘foster fail’ situation may not see their wish granted. And the humans know that keeping the cats happy is what is important. But you never know, because he finally met them! And it looks like it’s going purrty well….
