If you pay any attention to the world of animal rescue, you often see cats stuck in high places. They’ve been rescued from atop light and telephone poles, tall trees and towering buildings. But then there are also the opposite rescues. Like dozens of animals being pulled to safety from inside storm drains, sewers and the depths of the underground. So when the call came in of a kitten being trapped under a light pole, it was a new one for everyone.

Meows From Under the Light Pole
The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services shared the unlikely story on their social media to the delight of everyone. It was a normally hot day in San Antonio that slowly transitioned into a clear night to enjoy the city. But then, some good Samaritans were walking past an intersection of I-37 on the southeast side of the city. All of a sudden, they stopped in their tracks. Because they caught the faint hint of tiny mews coming from somewhere! But they were no where near any nature or homes. In fact, the busy intersection was NO place for a tiny animal.

Searching the area, they discovered the noise coming from a most unexpected spot. It was UNDER the bottom of the crosswalk pole, right on the corner of the busy roadway! They quickly contacted the San Antonio Animal Care services where Officers Guevara and Perry quickly rushed to the scene.
Out of the darkness and into the shining lights of safety.
Obviously this wasn’t the first time the officers had to rescue a kitten. But it was likely the first time they had to pull a feline from under the pole instead of perched high above them. Not only did they have to worry about how to get the kitten out safely, they had to be very cautious of the traffic. And should the kitten be terrified when recovered, they had to ensure it didn’t run into the road and back into danger.
Thanks to their fast thinking and gentle hands, this little one is now safe and has since been transferred into the care of
San Antonio Pets Alive“💛” A big THANK YOU to the caring residents who called regarding the distressed kitten. [And] to Officers Guevara and Perry for always being ready to help animals in need.
