Yes, people are still abandoning animals at animal shelters after hours. Usually trapped in a cage or box, just like this litter in Indiana. It was early June 2025 when the staff at LaPorte County Animal Control arrived to start their day. It had been a rainy morning so when they saw a soggy box sitting at the back gate, their hearts dropped. Because it’s not an uncommon occurrence at rescues or shelters sadly. And inside the box was exactly what they expected it to be.
The abandoned box at the back gate was full of fluffy cats.
In it was a young family with a momma cat and her 5 kittens. All terrified, cold and wet from being left in the elements. 
Staff quickly rushed the box inside to evaluate them and get them dried off. Their fluffy gray fur eventually dried and left the staff gushing over their cuteness. Because as much as rescuers will always advocate for spay and neuter practices, there’s no denying kittens are adorable. 
Getting to see them relax and play the way careless kittens should helped everyone calm themselves. Because when animals cannot defend themselves, those who do care for them also take on the anger. The frustration at limited resources from local governments translates to over populated shelters. So when a heartless human just dumps animals onto the shelters, it stretches everyone even thinner. Thankfully, the rescued animals help heal the hearts of the rescuers in return. 
The family was transferred to a foster home where they would be loved and eventually find furever homes. And they are loving the chill, comfy life!
The fluffy family gains a new member.
A few days after the family of cats was found, another kitten was about to have their life changed too. It was a tiny gray and white kitten discovered all alone and brought to the shelter. And after a checkup to make sure there were no transferrable diseases present, they joined the other kittens. This is always helpful for ‘singleton’ kittens to help develop healthy cat habits. Plus, a pile of kittens is always cuter the more kittens you can add!
The four kittens in the box were found in the road a couple weeks ago on a Sunday. Foster home found same day (thank goodness). Yesterday, the little gray and white one was found all by it’s little self.

Today they got a good check up and it was decided since they are all about the same age, it would be wisest to add the singleton to the litter, which made the most sense for all involved (thank you foster dad) Evening report is that they’re all happily playing together
