What defines a cat or dog as far as behavior anyway? Sure, they’re quite different, but we see cats all the time that are as bold and affectionate as any outgoing dog. And some dogs behave in a way one might think of as feline, too. It seems silly human rules don’t really matter much to animals. For example, here’s the story of a hilarious duo, Maple and Waffles. The former is the cutest Golden Retriever who really does behave like a cat.

The Golden Breakfast Club: Maple and Waffles
What could go together better than maple and waffles? While the combination of names sounds ideal for yummy breakfast food, the relationship for this duo isn’t quite so smooth. But it is comical!
Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, they share a home with Laura and Ryan (aka Spare Human), who is often the subject of Waffle’s love swats. Or ‘skippity paps‘ as some call them when done in rapid-fire repeat!
“We may not have a guard dog, but we have a guard cat,” shared The Golden Breakfast Club.
Maple was Raised From a Pup with Waffles
Eight years ago, Laura adopted Waffles when he was just a kitten. He’s quite a vocal, opinionated (grumpy), and spicy polydactyl cat (extra toes). It often seems like he’s angry, but his humans say:
“He’s pretty content 95% of the time, but a content Waffles is not as entertaining!”
When Maple and Waffles First Met
As you can see, he’s also dilute orange, so it goes without saying there is often some ‘orange cat behavior‘ in the house!
About five years later came happy-go-lucky Maple, whose high-puppy energy at six months old was too much for a relative to handle. In her new home, her constant curiosity and playful nature can often be a bit much for the cat. But in time, they became “frenemies” in the funniest sense of the word.
After a careful introduction through baby gates, the funny interactions commenced.
“When Maple and Waffles first met,” they shared.

Does Maple Believes She’s a Cat?
Like other dogs we’ve seen, Maple learned to behave like her cat sibling. But you can’t really fully appreciate that until you see them in action below (see video at the end).
How much is that doggie in the window?
“Our baby cat-dog,” shared The Golden Breakfast Club.
Exhibit A: How many dogs do you know who can only get comfortable by climbing the back of the sofa, cat-like?
Exhibit B: Presented with a cardboard box, the dog just had to give it a try to see what all the fuss is about.
Possibly, Maple thinks she is a cat, but at her size, she can’t quite execute the feline maneuvers so easily. Nevertheless, the irrepressible Golden doesn’t let anything stop her!
When Maple and Waffles play, the dog uses her paws in a distinctly feline way to swat. Thankfully, Waffles keeps her claws retracted.
“Paws locked and loaded,” they shared.
As for playing with toys, do you think the Goldie prefers dog or cat toys? Hmmmm.
