Sometimes, a child’s imagination or even an adult’s can make all the difference, helping us heal from loss and hang onto hope. Such an imaginative story made all the difference for a child missing their cat. And, as it turned out, the truth wasn’t far off from what was imagined!

Sunday’s Important Meow-ssion: Fighting Mice in the Capital!

One day, a beloved cat named Sunday went missing in Washington D.C. It’s not clear how the cat got loose, but Sunday ran away and didn’t come back, leaving the young girl at home heartbroken. Making matters worse, Sunday was missing in a very busy place, near the historic National Mall. It was no place for any house cat, with thousands of visitors and heavy traffic daily.

The worried family searched tirelessly for their furry family member. But she was nowhere to be found. That’s when some imagination helped the family hold onto hope as they continued searching. They came up with a hopeful story: Sunday was on an important meow-ssion: fighting mice and rats in the Capital. It sounds like a children’s book in the making.

“Despite thinking Sunday might have passed away, the family came up with a heartwarming tale for their daughter, suggesting Sunday hopped on the Metro to explore historical monuments,” shared Humane Rescue Alliance.

Purrhaps, Sunday was exploring the Smithsonian or the Capitol Building, and keeping watch on Lincoln. But she also had a patriotic duty, protecting everyone from the scourge of disease-carrying mice and rats! Maybe, she was helping the legendary ‘Demon Cat’ that haunts to Capitol Building, catching rats in the shadows? (That part was our own imagination from a previous story we shared.)

Sure, the story was made up. But in this case, it offered needed relief to the heartbroken girl and her family. They imagined their kitty was out there doing amazing things, and held onto hope.

The Ameowzing Ending to Sunday’s Adventures

As we know, pampered house cat faces so many perils outside. Therefore, we always recommend keeping them indoors or in a protected catio. But, Sunday managed to get loose despite best intentions. Fortunately, there was a tiny saving grace: Sunday had an up-to-date microchip! If only someone would find her and read the chip, a microchip reunion was pawsible at any time. Wonderfully, that’s exactly what happened… but it was nearly a year later!

For the rescuers “Found Friday” post, they showed the long-lost cat with her smiling dad.  How did they find her? After she got stuck in a window well, someone saw her there and contacted authorities. Soon, Animal Control and firefighters arrived to the rescue. From there, she arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance. As they always do, they scanned the kitty for the all-important microchip.

Sometimes, they get out-of-date contact information. But this time, it worked! A short phone call later, and they got the joy of experiencing a lovely reunion. Then, they shared the wonderful story with everyone.

You can see how happy this man is to bring her home. And, we can only imagine how excited the daughter was to see the cat after almost a year!

And here’s the cutest ending to the story: “The magical fact is that the area they found Sunday wasn’t far from where they told their daughter he was many months ago, protecting us all from mice,” the rescuers shared.

So, in the end, their imaginations were closer to the truth than anybody could believe!

Congratulations to the family for this wonderful reunion. And to think, it was made possible thanks to that tiny microchip. As many pointed out, the story is another reminder to keep beloved cats indoors. Otherwise, who knows where their adventurous hearts and tiny paws will take them?

Sunday looks like she's ready to go adventuring again!
