Animals crossing busy streets and highways are a pretty common occurrence. In the mountains, you mostly see big cats like mountain lions, some bears, and tons of deer. In Florida, gator crossings often end up in viral TikToks. However, this time, a viral video shows a small kitten who crossed a busy highway and fell into trouble (see video below).
Across the Road, Into the Sewer Drain
On average, The Pet’s Tech notes that over 5.4 million cats each year are killed on busy roads in the United States alone. Sadly, it’s not very good odds for cats crossing streets.
One day, a motorist in Florida happened to notice a small kitten running across the road. Fortunately, the kitten made it across. But then it fell right through a sewer grate into the storm drain below! After seeing that, the motorist called the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). They were immediately dispatched to the area to assist in attempting to rescue the little kitten. When they arrived at the scene, the FHP lifted a huge grate from the ground to reveal a large, dirty, water-filled hole.
Meanwhile, a bystander, possibly another member of the FHP, happened to catch the entire interaction on video. Later, they happily shared the tense rescue on their Facebook.
A policewoman bent down onto her stomach and reached into the water to pull the kitten out as a man held her legs. To protect herself from any kitty scratches or bites, the trooper wisely wore a pair of gloves. After wrapping the kitten in a towel, the video shows her cuddling the little guy close. And this was all done without ever losing her glasses on her head! That’s some pretty great skill!
Facebook Video Goes Viral
The post on the FHP’s Facebook page grew to epic proportions! The video has 67,000 views, with over 1,200 reactions, and dozens of comments.
One Facebook user noted, “Fabulous work Trooper! She’s lucky she didn’t loose her glasses “
“Lookie here meow, that was no misdemeanor thing the trooper did by jumping right in the middle of such felineous activity. She is truly the cat’s pajamas,” another Facebook user quipped.
The FHP teased that they should name the kitty Trooper, after their rescuer. The best part is the FHP states that the kitty is adopted!
“Today could have been a catastrophe for this kitten ! The kitten ran across a busy state road and fell through the sewer grate. Thankfully a motorist called *FHP to help this little one out! We believe the kitten will be fur-ever grateful to the Trooper and road rangers for their efforts! The kitten is no worse for the wear and has already been adopted. We think that’s pretty paw-some!” the FHP’s Facebook states.
The FHP has no information on the adoption of the kitten as of now. Maybe the trooper who saved that precious angel took him home!
A job well done! Thank you Florida Highway Patrol for saving this little darling!
