When you curl up and get into bed at night, does your cat join you? We know that cats are particular about where they sleep but there are purrfectly good reasons why you should let your cat sleep with you. Your cat is the master of their own domain, so if your cat loves sleeping with you, there are exact reasons why they choose to do so. After all, these intellectual creatures hardly do anything without precision and purpose.

If your cat is anything like mine, then he doesn’t go to bed with you, but you will find him there in your bed when you wake up each morning. As it turns out, when your cat chooses to sleep with you, it is beneficial to you both.

Check out this fun list of why you should let your cat sleep with you!

1. You’re Happy, I’m Happy

Although our cats are hunting flies in our home and the occasional larger insect, your cat is a predatory animal at heart. Their feline DNA has hardwired them to be able to hunt for survival, and vulnerability is a big deal to an animal with this mindset. When your cat is asleep, this is the time when they are most vulnerable, only second to when they are on their back. (Hence, why they aren’t fans of belly rubs…more on that here!)

This means that if your cat chooses to snuggle up with you, whether it’s a shared nap or nightly sleep, this is the ultimate sign of trust and security. And although a cat has the ability to spring into action straight from sleep, this clearly indicates that they trust you and that you do not pose a threat to them. Cats do not dole out trust to just anyone, because like respect, it’s earned and not given in their minds!

2. I’m Yours and You Are Mine, Human

Having a connection with your feline friend is a feeling like no other. And as your cat is a predatory being, they’re also a territorial one, too! So, basically, your cat sleeping with you is just another way of them claiming you as theirs. Additionally, your bed is nice and warm, and we all know that cats have an innate desire to keep themselves nice and warm. So essentially, they’ve claimed your bed as theirs, too.

Have you ever wondered why your cat likes to sleep on your head or neck when the two of you sleep together? This is because your legs and arms move the most, and they do not like to be disturbed during their slumber; also these are the warmest parts on your body. Just another reason why cats are totally brilliant!

3. I’m Happiest When I’m With You

Sure, there are many cats out there who are aloof. But contrary to popular belief, cats crave companionship with those they trust and care for. Your cat sleeps with you because you reassure them that they are desired and special. After all, don’t we all want to feel that way at the end of the day? 😉

When your cat sleeps with you, you’ll often feel those mighty and powerful purrs as a result. Purring can better your health, and it’s your cats way of Cheshire cat smiling, so soak it all in, human!

We know that cats are going to do as they please, but allowing your cat to sleep with you is also beneficial to your health and well-being. Bill Fish, cofounder of Tuck.com, says:

Having a guest in bed with you also reduces stress as well as brings warmth and comfort. As you feel your cat’s rhythmic breathing, it soothes you and helps you get to sleep more quickly.

If you struggle with anxiety, allowing your cat to sleep with you is proven to help. Dr. Steve Weinberg, founder of 911 VETS, claims that your cat sleeping with you provides calming effects, which are proven to reduce anxiety and can even help a person who deals with night terrors.
