Back in the late 70’s, construction began on a nuclear plant in Hartsville, Tennessee. This included a 540-foot tall cooling plant on the property. However, government is as government does and the project was never completed. Fast forward to Sept 19, 2025, 6:30 am. The Tennessee Valley Authority used over 900 pounds of explosives and demolished the tower in less than 10 seconds. Sure, the land would be cleared and used for future development. But that doesn’t matter for the wildlife who have moved in and used the abandoned location for the last 40 years. They weren’t warned. And for one tiny kitten later named Ashton, his life wasn’t lost in the blast like other animals possibly were. He was left suffering at the hands of human “growth and progress”.

But for little Ashton, thankfully he now has loving humans helping him heal from his injuries.

The Smith County Humane, TN team are responsible now for Ashton’s healing journey. And he couldn’t be in better hands.

Imagine being a little kitten enjoying your day chasing birds and stalking butterflies in the fields when all of a sudden you are blasted with a burning feeling! After an emergency vet visit last night…we do have more information about who we’re now calling “Ashton”.
Ashton is an approximately 6 week old , only 1 lb kitten, that has suffered some type of burns all over his little body.
Ashton will be recovering with meds and lots of love and attention. Don’t forget he’s getting yummy canned kitten foods to also help his emaciated state and to help his skin heal! He was posted and picked up within walking distance of the coming down of the cooling tower. Thankfully he is now safe and beginning recovery!!

To truly understand the massive implosion and effect on the surrounding area, they added photos of the event.

It had to be absolutely terrifying for the wildlife there. While events such as these have plans in place to counter the destructive nature, they are clearly not thorough enough.

While implosions can temporarily disturb local wildlife, standard demolition plans include measures to minimize risks to animals. Local and state authorities, such as the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, would have overseen any necessary wildlife mitigation efforts as part of the permitting process.

While he may have had a family with him, there’s no way to know what his life held before this. But for Ashton, he will be cared for and never have to be alone again.

Ashton Cleans Up Nicely

Even though he was taken to the veterinarian as soon as he was found, he’s got some serious healing to do.
Ashton here🐾 I’m the kitten found with ash and burns all over! I have started to heal but still have a long way to go. My little paws have to be wrapped and medicated due to the burns and my skin has started to fall off. Dr Dixon says that will happen due to scarring and not to be afraid. I’m doing my best to be brave!!
Of course the followers and supporters of Smith County Humane were more than happy to donate for his medical costs. And Ashton is like so many other injured kittens and cats. He’s still as sweet as can be throughout it all. Playing like a carefree kitten, even with his back legs wrapped to heal his delicate skin.
I’m so thankful for everyone who has sent good thoughts, prayers , and donations to help me heal! They say that I’m still on the scary side of healing but I think I feel good enough to play! My feet feel really funny and I’m told they are burnt pretty badly and that I may lose my toe beans (pads) before they heal back. I also have very itchy weird skin that keeps just going away. Some spots do hurt a little but they’re doing their best to keep me safe, loved and out of pain. Please remember to keep sharing my story as well as others that need help and homes! I promise to come back to see you all again soon and tell you everything !! ♥️ASHTON🐾

Be sure to follow along on Ashton’s healing journey too.

Because the day he finds his furever home, all our hearts will most certainly (and much more safely) implode with joy!
