Part of the fun of living with cats is creating a home that’s fun for them to explore. With some creativity, you can turn basic cardboard into a cat house paradise. However, with some advanced carpentry skills, the sky is the limit!

To get your imagination purring, here’s one of the most ameowzing cat houses we’ve ever seen. This cat house is a work in progress that first started in the late 80s. Today, it’s a living work of art.

The Ultimate Cat House: House of Nekko

Peter Cohen’s Santa Barbara home is called the ‘House of Nekko” and is home to around 24+ rescued cats and friends! Why Nekko? It means House of Cats in Japanese.

This ultimate cat house features Cohen’s favorite colors, blue, green, and yellow. Everywhere you look, there’s bright artwork, murals, and feline-inspired design elements that have to be seen to be believed. From the beginning, Cohen took advantage of his extensive background in construction to completely transform every room.

Seeing the cats interact with the home makes it all come alive.

“The cats make the house feel alive,” Cohen says.

As you can see, these rescued cats don’t live an ordinary life. They have it all, with an endless array of places to explore and things to see. When dawn breaks, the show begins as automated sunshades open. Music and lighting systems, as well as big-screen TVs, create the purrfect mood throughout the day as the cats congregate.

The Most Beautiful Catwalks Ever!

When night comes, the felines chase one another playfully along catwalks, connecting all the rooms. In all, they cover over 300 feet, or about the length of a football field.

“They can go really fast and its pretty loud,” Cohen says. “It does wake us sometimes.”

As the cats go, they pass through whimsical animal’s mouths, getting a scratch from the ‘teeth’ if they like. With so many areas to explore, it’s challenging to keep track of where all the cats are at any given time. But multiple cameras monitor the action while Cohen is away from home.

Unbelievable Details of the House of Nekko

As you would expect by now, not even the litter boxes in this dream Cat House are average. There are 23, all outfitted with a ‘custom fresh air ventilation system’ that channels stinky air outside. Thus, it’s always smelling fresh and clean. And for their drinking water, the cats can choose one of the 15 filtered fountains or the massive cascading waterfall. It’s an impressive work of art in itself.

But in case the cats are extra finicky, there’s even an indoor koi pond. For many of the cats, it’s a favorite place to explore. While they love watching the fish, they fortunately don’t catch them.

“They love to watch the fish; they also love to walk into the koi pond on the rocks.”

Nearby, there’s a stunning giant-sized cat tree with a beehive cat cave. It looks like it grew right out of the imagination. But it’s just one of so many creative elements at every turn. So the question is, who has more fun here? The cats or the people watching them?
