We love seeing the adult cats getting a second chance at life, like Mykonos, a cat named for a Greek island. It’s an unusual but fitting name for this 6-year-old boy from California. Like an island, he was hiding secrets and many wonderful qualities that only a few would discover.

Most of the time, he remained hidden from view. But given a home where he felt safe, he would open up like the most beautiful flower.

A Lovey-Dovey Purr Muffin

How did Mykonos wind up in a rescue, anyway? It’s a story that happens every day; his human passed away, and he was left alone with nobody to feed him.

Fortunately, neighbors saw him hiding under the porch, and he went to the local shelter. But in that environment, the odds were heavily against him finding a new home. And he was very sick from all the stress and being left to fend for himself. Like Marmalade, he is FIV+ and needs to be free from such stresses at all times.

So, he was extremely lucky when rescuers from Oakland’s Cat Town found him, describing him as a “handsome hunk of love.” They took him out of the scary shelter environment and gave him a foster home.

There, he became a “lovey-dovey purr muffin,” coming out of hiding after several days. His fosterer knew right away he was going to make a family very happy.

“He mostly stays under the bed still but comes out whenever I’m in the room,” said his fosterer. “He is super into cuddles and pets. This cat is BUILT, but is a total love bug. He is going to make some family very, very happy!”

Mykonos Had a Sudden Emergency

Just as he was coming out of his shell, they discovered a health emergency. After being without food for days, he developed a disease unique to cats, fatty liver syndrome, or hepatic lipidosis. His pancreas was also inflamed. But they didn’t give up, and with intensive veterinary care, he recovered with a feeding tube over several weeks. And Mykonos didn’t give up either and slowly recovered. In a crowded shelter, he never would have made it.

A Family Fell in Love with Mykonos

Even as he was still recovering in the Cat Town Adoption Center, something ameowzing happened. A family met Mykonos and fell in love with him. After spending three hours with him, they sent an adoption inquiry on the same day!

The odds of such a happy ending for an adult cat are slim, but he had luck, rescuers, and his cuddly nature on his side.

Soon, he had a new home with a friendly dog and a bunny!

“Things have been going really well. He’s a bit skittish with new sights and smells, but has been building his confidence every day, eating well, playing, and asking for belly rubs. He’s such an amazing cat, so affectionate, and just really wants to be a part of the family,” the adopters said.

Thanks to Cat Town’s supporters, Mykonos got the rare chance he needed to start a new life. And, as his fosterer suspected, he was going to make a family very happy! Congratulations to this family who gave this sweet boy a new beginning!

“Mykonos had a difficult journey, but we’re so grateful to know that he had the support of our community by his side. Because of you, we can take chances on cats like him, and because of you, they can find health, happiness, and a place to call home. Thank you!” Cat Town shared.
