In New York City, a kitten wandering around a subway terminal actually hopped on one of the cars! Some passengers thought the kitten belonged to someone. Could she have been lost or abandoned? Walking around the car, she didn’t look scared at all. But with all the people and noise, one could only imagine she had to be lost and afraid. Turns out the “subway kitten” had a one way ticket to her furever home.
How did people on the subway react?
At first it was surprising to see a small kitten in such a busy area. She walked around the subway car as if she knew where she was going. Most of the passengers looked and laughed. Some filmed on their phones as the soon to be viral kitten moved about the car unsure where to go. Not knowing if she was friendly, most passengers didn’t want to engage. A few people tried to pick her up but was afraid she may scratch or bite.
Not all heroes wear capes!
One passenger, 27 year old Betsaida Mercado, was really worried about the kittens safety. There are a lot of places on the subway for the furry commuter to get hurt. Mercado had never had a cat of her own. So she wasn’t sure what to do exactly. But she could tell from the loud meows that the kitty was probably afraid.
“One thing on me, I’m not a bystander. I would never just watch. If the door would have opened, she could have fallen in between,” she continues. “Animals, kids — I always want to help someone.”
That’s when she decided to go for it. Once the calico tabby ran by her feet, she was able to pick her up. Almost as if it was meant to be, the fluffy passenger didn’t fight, scratch or bite. She was able to hold her and get off at the next stop. There she would meet with her boyfriend and figure out what to do next.
Welcome Home!!
No owner for the kitten ever came forward. Mercado started to think she may soon be a cat mom. After discussing it with her boyfriend, they decided to take her home.
“I’ve actually asked my boyfriend, like, hypothetically, I see a stray cat. … ‘Would you be OK with it?’ And he was OK with it,” she says.
And after bathing her, they introduced the kitty to her new brother. The 13-year-old Pomeranian/Shih Tzu mix named King looked a bit concerned, but the two were quickly napping together.
After a vet visit, the only thing left to do was give the 7-week old kitten a name. With the help of TikTok supporters, she decided on “Emmie”. The name is short for MTA; Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the government agency that manages the subway system. What started as a scary situation for the “subway kitty” ended up being something that was meant to be.
“I think God put me on that train. He put me on that schedule so I would be the one,” she says. “He put me there to find my future child. She seemed like she was really lost. She found her mommy.”

CON’CAT’ULATIONS TO THE NEW FAMILY!
She later updated People magazine with more cute ‘mews’.
Mercado shares that Emmie has already mastered the litter box and claimed her space at home. “She’s a very fast learner. Extremely intelligent. Her personality is definitely coming out,” says Mercado. “She’ll be asleep one moment and then running around the house the next.”
