Ex rapper Sterling Davis, the “Trap King,” is a famous expert in TNR and all things cat. For those who don’t know, TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, and Release, an ongoing mission to curb feral cat populations humanely.

As you probably know by now, Cat Man Chris and Cole and Marmalade are all about TNR for many reasons, including preventing thousands of kittens from suffering.

Since the Atlanta resident started, Davis realized TNR was part of his missionHe also teaches local communities about the importance of compassion as he saves hundreds of cats. Thus, it’s all about people, cats, and having a positive effect on “every living creature he crosses paths with.”

“You don’t lose cool points for compassion,” the Trap King says.

In the last year, Sterling Davis has appeared on Netflix’s docuseries, Cat People. The show also featured an episode about a cat sanctuary on the island of Syros in Greece.

Recently, the Trap King has been meeting other US Cat People in Philly and New Jersey. And soon, he’ll be going abroad to Greece and teaming up with Let’s Be SMART, an international animal welfare organization based in NY. The group created their own cat sanctuary in Greece.

The Only Humane Method to Control Feline Populations

Teaming up with fellow nonprofit Let’s Be SMART (Successfully Managing Animal Rights Today), they hope to raise national awareness about the stray cat population crisis. He will personally meet with government and community leaders, kids, and adults. He’ll also meet the local stray kitties and participate in TNR efforts during the month.

“By thinking globally and acting locally, the two nonprofits believe thousands of stray felines can be saved from the cruelty and suffering that happens daily in Greece. The events will shed light on the importance of TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return), which is the only humane method to control feline populations,” his website states.

Stray Cats and Dogs in Greece

Greece has one of the largest stray cat and dog populations in the world. In both Greece and Cyprus, stories of animal cruelty are common.

For example, Athens – all by itself – may have over 2 million strays, reports The Guardian. As a result, legislation to make animal neutering mandatory has been proposed, with pushback from animal breeders. Along with sterilizing the animals, the legislation would introduce hefty penalties for animal abuse, make micro-chipping mandatory, and facilitate adoption.

Ongoing TNR Efforts

In response, the UK-based Greek Animal Welfare Fund (GAWF) has welcomed the legislation. According to director Paul McGlone:

“It is clearly very ambitious and will require a lot of change in attitudes and behaviour,” he said. “But it clearly intends to get a grip on the huge numbers of stray cats and dogs in the country and, gradually but humanely, reduce them through promoting and enforcing sterilisation. We welcome the broad intention behind this new legislation.”

GAWF has been part of ongoing TNR efforts in Greece, including Syros. They have been neutering 40 cats a month and hope to sterilize most of the 3,000 cats on the island. Now Trap King Davis and Let’s Be SMART will soon be joining the TNR efforts on the mainland.
